I have been an English tutor in France for 2 years. I have worked in various middle and high schools.
My teaching style is quite friendly and approachable. I rely on in-class activities and games for higher retention of information. I am going to use videos to make my students think and articulate their thoughts, because isn't that the end-goal of all communication? I have an open questions round where students can ask me anything they want, no holds barred, as long as it is in English.
Students are supposed to be curious, and their questioning nature needs to be encouraged as much as possible. I don't believe in giving homework, unless it is to prepare for some presentation that the students would need some time for; I prefer all questions and doubts are asked in class itself, so that other students who might have the same questions can learn directly from me instead of having to look for the answers themselves. I want to be available to my students for any questions they might have in the moment. I don't want my students to feel embarrassed because they don't understand something; I want them to be free to ask me anything, even if it has been covered previously. I don't move on unless all my students are on the same page and I am satisfied that everybody has understood the lesson. I encourage my students to talk as much as me in class. Learning can be fun, and I strive to make it so!
