I have completed the CELTA course for teaching English to speakers of other languages. During the course, I learned how to effectively plan a lesson, how to source, grade and use materials for a lesson and many other skills on how to hold a class. While holding lessons, I made the classes interesting to the students by incorporating their interests into the lesson. I made an effort to connect to the students and I believe that it worked as my tutors commented that my rapport with the class was one of my strong points. Another strong point of mine was my ability to deal with students' needs during a class, such as answering any questions that they had during the class and ensuring that they understood the answer or concept.

My own personality in a class is relaxed and easy going. If a student is nervous, they are much more likey to make a mistake, even if they know the correct answer. The teaching methodology which was taught during the CELTA course is called 'Selective eclecticism' which, put simply, means that we use parts of many other teaching methods like direct instruction, immersion etc. but we do not stick to any one particular system. This is a very effective method of teaching as it is highly diverse and doesn't follow a particular strict structure, but borrows the most effective parts for a particular learner. I also like to keep the lessons that I give 'student centered'. A student centered class means that most of the information will come directly from the student and it is my task to extract that knowledge from the student. This makes sure that I am not just presenting the information and hoping that the student remembers it, it engages the student's mind to the subject matter and has them "create" the answer in their mind, making it much more likely to be remembered.
